Topic : Problems Related to Vocabulary in Grade 5 and 6 and My Effort to Solve Them

1.Background of the study

Vocabularies are defined as a list of words. They are the building block for using everyday language. All the words that a person knows or uses are his or her vocabulary. It is one of the most important aspects of language which plays crucial role in language learning. We generally express our ideas, thoughts and feeling of any particular area by using the words that we have already known. Harmer (1991) says, "If language structures make-up of the skeleton of language then it is vocabulary that provides the vital organs and the flesh." It shows that vocabulary is an essential part of any language and plays an important role to learn language.

In the recent time, vocabulary teaching has received a significant interest in the field of teaching and learning. Curriculum Development Center (CDC) has designed school level English language courses on the basis of different activities and current methodologies that are updated and practiced in the field of language teaching. In those English textbooks and curricula, vocabulary teaching has gained a lot of priority; i.e. each chapter has at least one or more vocabulary related activities.

A child knows or learns the English words when we give her chance to speak and listen those words again and again. New and unknown words should be provided them in such a way as they will connect them with their real life. Moreover, learning of new vocabulary is to be an independent while speaking, listening, reading and writing.

2.Statement of the problem

I have been teaching at Shree Kalika Bal Vikas Secondary School, Rakha Bangdel, Khotang for the last 5 years as an English teacher. Students of 5 and 6 grades in my school are generally low in using and comprehending English words. This is because almost all the students' background is from poor English environment. They rarely get chance to use English words in real life situations. The governmental aided schools like ours do not give emphasis in English language teaching. Except English textbook, all the other subjects are published in Nepali medium. The students in the public schools feel hesitation and nervous to use new English vocabularies. They think that using English words is to be a joker among friends.

They are reluctant to speak English in the classroom. Even a simple and easy type of words may create problems to them. Complex and long words are out of their access to comprehend. So, the students leave English texts unread. If they don’t understand words they read, they never get excited to read English texts. Rather, they get harassed and English subject will be problematic to their whole life. Seeing this kind of miserable condition while teaching in the classes, I have concluded to do an action research relating to improving of teaching new English vocabularies in my classes so that students can get more and more relevant ways of knowing difficult English words and excitement to the new English words while reading.

In course of my teaching, I had just used teacher-centered techniques; I used to write the difficult word-meanings from the text and the students just copied the meanings but that did not work well. After one or two days, they forgot everything they wrote. For the sake of improving vocabulary power of the students of my teaching classes (Grade 5 and 6), I did this research work.

3.Objectives of the study

My research had the following objectives:

  • To overcome the problems while teaching new English vocabularies.

  • To implement more techniques of vocabulary teaching in the classroom.
